Time Of Plenty - Northern Shrike, acrylic, 14 x 18 inches, 2012

SOLD

“This painting was inspired by many walks at the Courtenay Airpark. It was there that I had my only sighting of a Northern Shrike. The blackberries grow thick along sections of the trail and our children have had lots of fun there trying to catch grasshoppers. The transition from Summer to Fall is a time of abundance: crops are being harvested and bright colors are everywhere. In my painting, both of these are evident in the blackberry bramble. In times of plenty the Northern Shrike will impale its prey on a thorn or barbed wire to save it for later. If you look closely you will find the grasshopper it has cached.”
